Indian head massage is an ancient therapeutic treatment that has been practiced for thousands of years. It involves the manipulation of soft tissues in the upper back, arms, shoulders, neck, scalp and face. A range of specific massage techniques, pressures, and rhythms are used, to allow for a deeply relaxing treatment. Stress often presents itself as physical tension and is commonly felt in the neck and shoulders, over time, such tension can accumulate and trigger several adverse symptoms and side effects, such as, impairment of life energy circulation to that area, restriction of movement, and referred pain.
Indian Head Massage offers a number of benefits, including; the stimulation and improvement of scalp circulation – which in turn encourages the growth and strength of hair, blood circulation is increased locally – bringing oxygen and nutrients to the cells of the face, the function of respiratory systems is encouraged – increasing energy and providing fresh oxygen to vital organs. It also helps strengthen and mobilize the muscles, tissues and spinal nerves of the head, face, scalp, neck, shoulders, upper spine, hands and arms.
As a holistic health therapist, I encourage and practice the use of natural, alternative therapies to help relieve symptoms associated with a variety of ailments. Indian Head Massage is effective in relieving the symptoms associated with headaches, Temporomandibular joint syndrome, facial palsy, sinusitis, facial spasm, depression, insomnia, anxiety attacks, migraines, tinnitus, dizziness, eye strain, hypertension, carpal tunnel syndrome due to referred pain, frozen shoulder, neck and upper back pain.
Before the treatment begins, I demonstrate some light breath-work techniques, as I consider it a crucial part to aiding in relaxation, as it increases awareness of one physical self. Shifting focus to one’s breath can instantly reduce feelings of anxiousness or stress and can allow you to feel present and grounded.
For the initial treatment, we will have a short consultation to ensure I can tailor the treatment to your needs. A typical massage lasts about 40 minutes and can be a dry treatment or include the use of natural mediums. It begins with the upper spine and shoulders. Through a combination of relaxing massage techniques and varied pressure, I work along muscles such as the Trapezius, where tension is often held, to encourage relaxation and relieve such tension. Working this area also relieves headaches and improves the circulation of the Cerebrospinal fluid. Moving to the arms, and hands, I then apply hand Reflexology techniques to further encourage homeostasis within the body. Finally, I work on the head and scalp, using precise and relaxing techniques, to relieve tension and encourage circulation to the area, thus promoting healthy hair growth. Indian head massage also includes a gentle face massage to aid circulation, improve skin tone, and reduce sinus problems and headaches.
At the end of the treatment, I demonstrate further light breath-work, to slowly reawaken their senses and physical body, and leave them feeling relaxed and revitalized.
